How can you use transient solution when we don't know the critical damping factor? I see you used the homogeneous solution for when the damping factor is less than 1, but how can you do that when we don't know the damping factor?

The problem tells us that, "Figure P3.20 displays test results from a free vibration response." So based on the measured movements of the actual system we can calculate the damping ratio by way of the log-dec!

Never mind I understand why, thanks
